I.Basic Information
The School of Mechanical and Automotive Engineering /School of Automotive in Hangzhou Bay is a secondary college under Ningbo University of Technology. It moved to Qianwan New Area for school-running in September 2014, covering an area of 500 mu (approximately 333,333 square meters). The school boasts a beautiful campus environment and advanced teaching facilities. Taking full advantage of its location in an industrial agglomeration area, the school has deeply promoted the integration of industry and education as well as university-enterprise cooperation. It has established strategic cooperative relationships with well-known enterprises such as Geely Group, China Automotive Engineering Research Institute (CAERI), and Mando Corporation. The school strives to build a first-class domestic automotive industry-featured school characterized by the "four-in-one" model of government, industry, academia, and research, and the "three-park integration" of campus, industrial park, and R&D park.
The school offers 4 undergraduate programs, namely Mechanical Design, Manufacturing and Automation, Material Forming and Control Engineering, Automotive Service Engineering, and Vehicle Engineering, as well as 1 Sino-foreign cooperative education program. There are more than 2,600 students studying at the school. Currently, the school has 123 faculty members, including 16 professors and 45 associate professors. Among the teachers, there are 2 experts selected into the national talent introduction program, 2 talents in Zhejiang Province's "151 Talent Project", 3 talents in Ningbo's "4321 Talent Project", and 10 talents in Ningbo's Leading and Top-notch Talent Project. In addition, the school has also invited 23 senior talents from Geely to serve as part-time professors of the Automotive school.
Adhering to the school-running philosophy of "student-oriented and industry-serving", the school is committed to cultivating high-quality talents who meet the development needs of the new productive forces in the automotive industry in the new era. With the key components of the new energy vehicle industry as the core, it builds a high-quality scientific research service platform to contribute to the development of the regional economy.
II.Teaching
In 2017, it was selected into the list of Top 10 Pilot Characteristic Colleges in Ningbo.
In 2018, it was recognized as a Provincial Industry-Education Integration Demonstration Base for Institutions of Higher Education in Zhejiang Province.
In 2019, it was approved as a University Collaborative Innovation Center of Ningbo and a Provincial Key Construction Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Automotive Engineering Technology.
In 2020, it was selected as a Construction Unit of Zhejiang Provincial Industry-Education Integration Project and became a technical supplier of Geely Automobile.
In 2021, it was included in the first batch of National Modern Industrial Colleges and recognized as a Zhejiang Provincial Key-Supported Modern Industrial College.
In 2022, it assumed the role of Chairman Unit of the Zhejiang Automotive Industry Industry-Education Integration Alliance.
In 2023, the "4-in-1" digital automotive industry outstanding engineers "dual-system" joint training program, co-developed with Geely Automobile Group, was officially signed and launched.
In 2024, it became the Chairman Unit of the Zhejiang Modern Industrial College Alliance, and obtained the approval for the Master's Degree Program in Mechanical Engineering.
In 2025, it achieved multiple milestones: approval of the Zhejiang-Serbia International Joint Laboratory, and the Zhejiang New Energy Vehicle Technology Collaborative Innovation Center; awards including the Second Prize of Zhejiang Provincial Science and Technology Progress, and the Second Prize of Zhejiang Provincial Teaching Achievements; and recognition of its course as a National First-Class Course.
The school is equipped with excellent school-running conditions and advanced teaching instruments and equipment. It has established a Provincial Key Construction Experimental Teaching Demonstration Center for Automotive Engineering Technology, under which there are three institutional experimental sub-centers (namely the Basic Mechanics Sub-center, Advanced Manufacturing Sub-center, and Automotive Technology Sub-center), three research platforms (including the Intelligent Manufacturing Platform, Automotive Crash Safety and Lightweight Platform, and Automotive Vibration and Noise Platform), as well as a Student Scientific Research and Innovation Practice Center. The total area of the laboratories exceeds 10,000 square meters, and the fixed assets of instruments and equipment amount to more than 70 million yuan.
III.Research
The school has a strong academic atmosphere and relatively strong scientific research capabilities. Mechanical Engineering has been selected as a first-class discipline (Category B) in Zhejiang Province and a key discipline (Category A) in Ningbo City. Over the past decade, the school has achieved remarkable results in scientific research, establishing eight major research teams including the New Energy Vehicle Crash Safety and Lightweight Team. It has undertaken a total of 11 national-level projects, more than 30 provincial and ministerial-level projects, more than 80 municipal-level projects, and more than 530 enterprise-commissioned projects, with the received funds for horizontal projects reaching 59.1 million yuan. It has been granted more than 190 invention patents, and 32 patented technologies and scientific research achievements have been transformed into practical applications, helping enterprises achieve an additional output value of 2.6 billion yuan. It has also won 10 provincial and ministerial-level scientific and technological achievement awards, including the second prize of Zhejiang Provincial Technology Invention Award.
IV.Student Development
Over the past decade, the school has cultivated nearly 5,000 undergraduate graduates for society, with an employment rate of over 96%. Among them, more than 16% of graduates have been admitted to postgraduate programs at well-known domestic and international universities such as Zhejiang University; 51% have stayed in Ningbo for employment or entrepreneurship (a quarter of whom work in Qianwan New Area). Outstanding role models have emerged, including Chen Meijia—one of the 100 Excellent Recipients of the National Scholarship, who was featured in People’s Daily.
Students have also achieved remarkable results in innovation and entrepreneurship. In the past decade, they have led and completed 36 national-level and 42 provincial-level scientific and technological innovation projects, published 78 papers in renowned domestic and international journals, and obtained a total of 222 authorized patents (including 82 invention patents). In major domestic and international competitions such as the China International "Internet Plus" College Students’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, the National University Students’ Engineering Training Comprehensive Ability Competition, and the National University Students’ Mechanical Innovation Design Competition, they have won more than 420 discipline competition awards at or above the provincial level. Key competition achievements include:
The first prize in the National Mechanical Design Competition and the "China Good Design Award - Creativity Award" in 2018;
The special prize in the National University Students’ Engineering Training Comprehensive Ability Competition in 2019;
The silver and bronze awards in the China International "Internet Plus" College Students’ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition in 2021;
A historic breakthrough with the silver award in the 14th "Challenge Cup" China University Students’ Entrepreneurship Plan Competition in 2024.
V.International Exchange
The school is actively committed to expanding international academic exchanges and cooperation.
In 2018, it successfully hosted the International Symposium on Automotive NVH Technology and undertook the 1st National Symposium on Safety of Remaining Power Batteries for Electric Vehicles. By 2024, it had organized a total of 6 sessions of conferences focused on electric vehicles and lithium battery safety.
In 2022, it launched the "Hangwan" Forum at its Qianwan Campus; as of 2025, 20 sessions of the "Hangwan" Forum have been held.
In 2023, it successfully hosted the China-Serbia Cooperation Exchange Conference.
