I.Basic Information

The School of Civil and Transportation Engineering has evolved from the Department of Architectural Engineering established at the time of the university’s founding in 1983. It now offers two first-level disciplines — Civil Engineering and Transportation Engineering, along with six undergraduate programs: Civil Engineering, Traffic Engineering, Building Environment and Energy Application Engineering, Architecture, Engineering Management, and Intelligent Construction. The school also has professional master’s degree programs in Civil and Hydraulic Engineering, Transportation Engineering, and Engineering Management (Smart Transportation direction).

The school currently has 144 faculty and staff members, including a large number of high-level talents such as recipients of the National Science and Technology Progress Award (Second Prize) and the National Technology Invention Award (Second Prize), Qianjiang Scholars, and provincial-level “Ten Thousand Talents” experts. In recent years, adhering to the development philosophy of “having a voice in academia and a standing in the industry”, the school has achieved remarkable results in disciplinary development, program construction, and talent cultivation. The school currently has professional laboratories such as the Construction Engineering Experimental Center, Mechanics Experimental Center, Energy Conservation Engineering Center, and Urban Traffic Experiment Center.

II.Teaching

The School of Civil and Transportation Engineering currently has six undergraduate majors. The Civil Engineering major is a national-level first-class undergraduate program (approved in the first batch in 2019) and a national-level characteristic construction major, which passed the professional evaluation conducted by the National Committee for Professional Education Assessment of Civil Engineering in Institutions of Higher Education in 2015. The Traffic Engineering major is a characteristic construction major of Zhejiang Province, and its master’s program passed the German ASIIN certification in 2015. The Architecture major is a characteristic construction major of Ningbo and is among the first batch of pilot programs for the CDIO engineering education model approved by the Ministry of Education. The Building Environment and Energy Application Engineering major is an advantageous major of Ningbo and an emerging characteristic construction major of Zhejiang Province. The Engineering Management major is a school-enterprise cooperation talent training base of Ningbo.

III.Research

The school has two provincial first-level key disciplines: Civil Engineering and Transportation. It also hosts several provincial-level platforms, including the Zhejiang Key Laboratory of Deep-Sea Foundation Intelligent Construction and Operation & Maintenance, the Zhejiang Engineering Research Center for Digital Road Construction Technology, and the Zhejiang Collaborative Innovation Center for Smart Transportation and Big Data. The school has affiliated enterprises, including architectural design institutes, supervision companies, transportation design institutes and testing companies. It has also undertaken over 30 national, provincial, and ministerial-level scientific research projects. Its research on the Hangzhou Bay Sea-Crossing Bridge earned the Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award. Additionally, it has received more than ten other awards at the provincial and ministerial level.

IV.Student Development

In terms of student development, building on the national pilot program for industry-education integration and the Outstanding Engineers Education Initiative, the school is committed to cultivating the “craftsman spirit” among students. It has trained nearly ten thousand graduates, among whom have emerged a large number of distinguished alumni, including National Labor Models, provincial and municipal labor models, as well as general managers and chief engineers of construction enterprises. Students have repeatedly won first and second prizes in the National Structural Design Competition. The postgraduate admission rate (for undergraduates) has remained above 20% for many consecutive years. The quality of talent training and career development level consistently rank among the top in the province. As a result, programs such as Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering, and Building Environment and Energy Engineering have been recognized as “Absolute Advantage Majors” by the Zhejiang Provincial Evaluation Institute.

V.International Exange

In the field of international exchange, the school actively engages in global cooperation, drawing on advanced international experience to strengthen its outward-oriented school-running characteristics. It encourages faculty members to participate in professional training programs at renowned universities abroad. In 2018, the school hosted the inaugural “China Ningbo—Central and Eastern European Countries (CEEC) Infrastructure Education and Investment Cooperation Forum” and established the “China–CEEC Urban Construction and Investment Research Center”. To further expand international education initiatives, the school began enrolling international students in its Civil Engineering program in 2014. Currently, there are 28 international students studying at the school.
