I.Basic Information

The Institute of Micro/Nano Materials and Devices at Ningbo University of Technology was established in 2021 as an independently operated secondary research institute of the university. It originated from the "Micro-Nano Structures and Devices" innovation team founded in 2009, which was upgraded in 2018 to a High-Level Innovation Team of Zhejiang Provincial Higher Education. TThe institute runs the Ningbo Class A Key Laboratory of Silicon Carbide Semiconductor and a Provincial International Joint Laboratory. It currently employs 29 faculty members, including 8 full professors, 11 associate professors and 26 PhD holders. The team comprises 4 national-level talents, 3 Young Talent Awardees of the China Association for Science and Technology, 4 provincial key talents, 5 leading talents in Higher Education of Zhejiang Province, 4 Yongjiang talents of Ningbo, and 8 municipal leading and top talents of Ningbo. The Dean, Professor Yang Weiyou, is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry (FRSC), Foreign Academician of the Ukrainian Academy of Engineering, recipient of the State Council Special Allowance of China, Zhejiang Provincial Distinguished Young and Middle-Age Expert and a Top-Tier Talent of Ningbo.

II. Research

The institute is mainly engaged in fundamental research on the preparation, properties, and applications in optoelectronic devices of novel semiconductor materials,  focusing on five major areas:

  1. Wide-bandgap semiconductors (SiC and diamond)

  2. Semiconductor quantum dots and display lighting

  3. Semiconductor micro-nano materials and new energy

  4. Two-dimensional semiconductor materials and devices

  5. Theoretical studies of semiconductor properties

It occupies over 2,000 square meters of research space, with equipment valued at  more than 70 million RMB. The institute has led numerous significant research projects, including 1 Ningbo Top Talent Project, 1 Pre-973 Program project, 1 sub-project under the National Key R&D Program of China, and over 20 projects from the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC). To date, its members have published more than 300 SCI-indexed papers in top journals such as Nature Materials, Nature Nanotechnology, Nature Communications, Chem, PNAS, Advanced Materials, Journal of the American Chemical Society, and Angewandte Chemie International Edition. It also holds more than 100 authorized national invention patents, has authored one invited international academic monograph and two book chapters, and has received 5 provincial/municipal natural science awards.

III. Student Development

The institute collaborates regularly with domestic universities and research institutions to jointly train master's and doctoral students, having established a well-developed graduate education system. To date, it has graduated over 100 students, including 4 provincial and 9 university-level outstanding doctoral dissertations, and 4 provincial and 7 university-level outstanding master’s theses.

IV.International Exchange

Relying on a provincial-level international sci-tech cooperation platform, the institute actively promotes international exchange and collaboration, having established substantial research partnerships with institutions in Ukraine, Russia, Serbia, Croatia, Poland, and other countries.
