Recently,the Smart Transportation Team from the School of Civil and Transportation Engineering at Ningbo University of Technology has achieved a major breakthrough in traffic signal control. China’s first regional green wave network has been officially put into operation in Ningbo Southern Business District. The team has successfully tackled the industry challenge of regional green wave coordinated control, providing a replicable and promotable Ningbo model for the comprehensive upgrade from single green wave corridors to integrated green wave networks.
Field road test results show significant improvements after the implementation of the green wave network:
·Off-peak travel time has been reduced by an average of 36%;
·Average travel speed has increased from 23.6 km/h to 37.8 km/h;
·Average number of stops per trip has dropped from about 3 times to less than 1 time.
With approximately 168,000 vehicles entering and leaving the district daily, the project is estimated to save about 29.43 million yuan in annual fuel costs and reduce harmful emissions by around 589.7 tons, including carbon monoxide (CO), nitrogen oxides (NOₓ) and carbon dioxide (CO₂).
